2013 FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS

Girls Volleyball
The Girls Varsity Volleyball opened the season with high hopes of success. With a veteran group of seniors, the team looked towards the Ocean League title. In the middle of the season, the team struggled with injuries, and finished a strong 3rd place in league. The team entered CIF playoffs competing against the #4 seed, Windward. The team fought hard but eventually lost. One highlight of the season was the commitment of two seniors to compete at the collegiate level next year. Senior middle hitter Alexandra Sams has committed to compete next fall at Vassar College. And Liat Hackmann signed a National Letter of Intent to Georgia Southern University. This marks the first volleyball player in BHHS history to earn a full ride athletic scholarship to an NCAA DIvision 1 program.

Boys’ Water Polo
The 2013 Beverly boys’ water polo team capped off another successful season with its 8th consecutive playoff berth and a 15-12 overall record. The team scrapped its way to a second place tie in the Ocean League final standings with big wins over El Segundo, Torrance, and Culver City. The team was led by its core of seniors starting with goal keeper, Hans Tercek. Hans locked down the defense, registering 210 saves on the season, 98 of which were in Ocean League play. In the field senior David Kotlarenko led the team in goals scored (71), steals (51), blocked shots (10), and ejections drawn (37) to go along with his 23 assists. Senior, Mason Segal sparked the team’s counter attack, ringing up 47 goals, 20 assists and adding some much needed speed to the offense. Junior Justin Shegarin was a key contributor, leading the team in assists (28) and as the second leading scorer (53) all while providing the Normans with a gritty physical presence. Junior Michael Nassirzadeh chipped in 35 goals and 21 assists while playing stellar defense for the 2013 campaign. David Kotlarenko and Justin Shegarian earned first team All-Ocean League honors while Mason Segal was named to the 2nd team.

Football
For the 2013-14 Norman football program it was not the season we had hoped for, but it was a season of first for many of our athletes.  Over 80% of our varsity football team saw their first action in a varsity game this season.  We gained much needed experience and continued to improve throughout our 10 weeks of the season. We saw multiple sophomore and junior players grow and develop during the year with their first receptions, carries, tackles, sacks, and touchdowns.  In this rebuilding process our team and coaching staff has developed great building blocks for the future.  With tremendous work and dedication this off-season the future can be bright for Norman football.  We look to build on the effort, determination, and no quit attitude of our young men and turn this around next season.

Girls Tennis
The Girls Tennis team had a great season and still going strong. The team took the Ocean League title defeating a strong Santa Monica team on both occasions. In CIF team play, they reached the semi-finals by defeating some very successful Division II teams along the way including Laguna Beach, the number three ranked team in Div. II CIF. In individual play, Beverly qualified four players to continue on in CIF individuals. Martina Bocchi and Lolita Gorbacheva finished one-two in Ocean League singles competition while the doubles team of Miriam Binman and Charlotte Frank were runner-ups in doubles competition also qualifying them to continue on in sectional play at The Claremont Club. All in all, the team had one of its most successful seasons in years.

Cross Country
The 2013 Cross Country Girls and Boys Varsity teams return to CIF with a new coach. The Beverly Hills High School 2013 Cross Country season started with the selection of a new coach just as school began. This put the program at a disadvantage, as most other teams were finishing their 10 week summer training cycle. With two coaches and 110 students-athletes, the season started out with some rough edges. Even so, it was business as usual, with returning athletes having to adjust to the new coaching system and style and a myriad of freshman (over 50 freshman made the team) beginning a new running career at Beverly. After a couple weeks of competition, a number of juniors and our only senior female athlete quit the girls varsity team leaving us with sophomores and freshmen. Like true championships, they did a fabulous job of accepting the responsibility, picking up the load and managing the pressure.

After the hiring of a new coach, the coaching staff was able to settle in and get down to business. The senior boys started to shine and the freshman started to show some real promise. Just before the championship season, the team had an impressive showing at the Mt. SAC Invitational, with Aaron Wolfe, this season's MVP, earning a covenanted Cow Bell, winning in the race with a personal best performance and propelling the team to a race victory earning a prestigious plaque certificate. A number of junior boys and the fabulous freshman earned personal best at one of the toughest cross country courses in the state. With all the turmoil, the cross country program still managed to have a successful year with second place finishes in the Ocean league for the Varsity, Boys JV, Girls JV and Boys Freshman team and the very young Girls Varsity finishing in third place. Both the Girls and Boys Varsity teams qualified for the CIF Southern Section prelims.

Girls Golf
For the first time in many years, there was not a girls golf season. However, one BHHS girl did participate in the individuals. She shot a 73 to qualify in the freelance tournament, which is for girl golfers whose schools do not field a team. She then participated at river ridge golf course in the CIF regionals where she also qualified for CIF finals at Talega golf course in San Clemente. Again, she qualified by shooting 73 to participate in the CIF state qualifier at rancho California golf course in Temecula. At that tournament, you had to be in the top nine of the individuals to qualify and she finished tied for 4th with a 70. She then went to Carmel, where she played in the state finals with the top 25 golfers in the state. She finished tied for 10th with a 75.
