2013 SPRING SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS

Baseball
Varsity Baseball finished 3rd in the Ocean league, but lost to Highland in the 1st round of the playoffs 6-5. Nick Reskin was a 1st Team All League. He was the Ace of the staff and played short-stop when not pitching. The other 1st Team All League performers were Jared Forman and Andreas Breliant. Jared and Andreas were unanimous picks, Jared as a Pitcher and outfielder and Andreas as the Ocean League Catcher. 2nd team performers were Grant Thompson center fielder, Zack Gaon 1st baseman and Jack Ross 2nd baseman. The teams’ overall record was 12-14 and league 6-4. The pre-season schedule was the toughest schedule in the last 10 years. The Normans played 8 teams in the pre-season that advanced to the LA City or CIF playoffs. 


Girls Lacrosse
Girls Lacrosse had the best season yet. For the first time in the history of the program the team made it to playoffs where they lost to Glendale in the first round 7-5. The lady Normans had some huge accomplishments this season. Dillan Watts will be the first graduate to go on to play NCAA Division One Lacrosse at Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY. Natasha Kashani finished the season with 93 goals – a school record. She was 5th in the state for goals and 1st in the Southern Section. Inbar Avrahami and Natasha made the Western Division of the National Team and played in a tournament in Philadelphia Memorial Day Weekend. Inbar had fantastic saves in goal and Natasha actually scored the game winner in triple overtime for their team. The team had 4 US Lacrosse Academic All Americans as well: 
Natasha Kashani, Inbar Avrahami, Chloe Ticknor and Kristen Huang (going to CAL in the fall). Coach Marks could not be more proud of the girls!!!


Softball
The softball team made it to the playoffs for the first time in 6 years where they lost to Ocean View. 1st Team All Ocean League players were: Erica Davis, Junior, Shortstop and set 3 school records: Most hits 40, most runs 34, and Highest Average .556. 2nd Team All Ocean League honors were bestowed on Elena Rust, Leah Shapiro and Shyra Costas. Elena was Captain and played centerfield and was a 2012 2nd team honoree. Elena is attending Cal Lutheran to play soccer. Leah was Captain and played first base and was a 2012 1st team honoree. Leah will be attending Brandeis. Shyra Costas, sophomore was Captain and played second base, pitched and was a catcher. Team awards went to MVP Offense, Erica Davis; Coach's Award, Elena Rust; Coach's Award, Leah Shapiro; Freshman of the Year, Emma Carruth and Most Improved Shyra Costas.

Swimming
The boy’s varsity swim team capped off an undefeated season leaving the competition in their wake as they dominated the Pioneer League Championship meet. The team was led by senior Steven Turbull who broke school records in the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle, qualifying for and advancing to CIF Finals in both events. The team also received excellent performances from Juniors Alex Ayzenberg, who qualified and advanced to the CIF Finals is the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, as well as Mason Segal, David Kotlarenko, David Prokopenko, and Devyn Maggio on their way to the league title.  

The girl’s team was reenergized by the arrival of two stellar freshman swimmers, Amy Okada and Jamie Dodd. Amy Okada broke school and league records in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke finishing in the top eight in both events at CIF. Jamie Dodd qualified for CIF in the 200 and 500 freestyle, breaking the school record in the latter. Both girls were members of the school record breaking 200 freestyle relay team and the 400 freestyle relay team, helping both qualify for the CIF meet. Strong swims from sophomore Lorien Orpelli and juniors Allie Kahn and Synclaire Shannon rounded out the relay teams at league and at CIF.



Boys Tennis
The Boys tennis team had one of the most successful seasons in recent years. They started by defeating some very strong teams in the early part of the season capped off by a victory over always strong Peninsula High School for only the second time in the school's history. The team defeated Santa Monica twice in league play to capture the Ocean League title. The team then entered the Division II team playoffs and had very impressive wins over Anaheim/Canyon, Diamond Bar and Valencia/Valencia (the #6 seed). The Boys team reached the semis of Div. II losing to the number two ranked team, Palm Desert. Three players went onto CIF individuals, Drew Freeman (singles), Ethan Kunin and Adriano Saitta in doubles play.


Track and Field
It was an amazing season for both the boys and girls Track and Field programs culminating with Sidney Segal, Alex Rohani and Chanan Batra participating in the CIF Track and Field State Finals in Fresno. Sidney was a double-medalist, taking second place in the 3,200-meter in 10 minutes, 25.71 seconds (a school record) and fifth place in the 1,600 at 4:51.87. Alex Rohani took third place in the boys 400-meter in 46.71, a new school record. Chanan Batra also set a school record in the 1,600, finishing in 4:13.39

The girls’ varsity won the Ocean League Cup at league finals, while the frosh-soph team was the dual meet league champions and received the Ocean League finals plaque. Varsity had 20 All League performances and qualified in 15 events to the CIF Southern Section prelims, and in the finals finished in 9th place as a team. The team was led by Sydney Segal, who set school records in the 1600m (4:52.53), 3200m (10:36.09) and 5000m (17:18), and is U.S. ranked in all three events. In league she won the 800m, 1600m and 3200m. She brings her total at Beverly to 9 times League Champion and 12 times All League, both records. At CIF she won the 1600m and took 2nd in the 3200m. This is the second year in a row she is ALL CIF in both events. Senior Lily Ting was All League and just missed making the CIF SS Finals in the 800m. Amanda Block set a new varsity and frosh-soph record in the pole vault going 10-3 and was the league champion, and just missed making the CIF Finals. Madison Golden made the CIF finals in both the 100m (7th place) and 200m (9th place). Annabel Personeni made the CIF Finals in the 800m and took 7th place. Other frosh-soph performers who had an outstanding year were All League performers Asia Meadows, Elsa Woods, Paige Dubelko, Jaime Shirley, Sara Neiman and Danay Diaz.












The boys’ varsity and boys’ frosh-soph teams won the league dual meet championship. Varsity had 14 All League performances and qualified in 8 events to the CIF southern section prelims, and the team finished 5th place in. The team was led by three seniors, Alex Rohani, Chanan Batra and Eli Flesch. Alex Rohani, the defending State Champion in the 400m, set a new school record 47.12, won league and the CIF Finals and is U.S. ranked in the 400m for the second year in a row. He also took 7th place in the 200m where his best time this year was 21.60. Alex leaves Beverly with 5 league championships, 12 time All League, 3 times All CIF in the 400m, and will be All State two years in a row. Chanan leaves Beverly with the most boys’ league titles ever, 6 in all, and leaves with 8 All League performances. He finished 4th in the CIF finals in his event, meeting the State qualification standard. Eli Flesch was the teams number one distance runner and was the league champion and ran at the CIF prelims. The boys’ varsity Sprint Medley Relay of Raehaan Poonja, Lucas Brito, Alex Rohani & Chanan Batra ran 3:29.79, a school record, and made the U.S. rankings. The 4X400m relay took 2nd in the CIF SS Finals and qualified for the CIF Masters Meet. The freshman and sophomore classes of Dominic Perlman, Raehaan Poonja, Lucas Brito, Max Walder and Scott Senior had outstanding performances for the team.


Boys Volleyball
The Boys volleyball team rose on top finishing 2nd place in Ocean League and claiming many elite titles along the way. One of which is the 1st place title in the Laguna Blanca Tournament as well as defeating cross town rival, Santa Monica High, for the first 8yrs on their home court. The season ended in the last game in round 2 of the CIF finals. Boy’s volleyball will be returning next year with essentially a full team of starting underclassmen who certainly bring a lot to the court.
